proofreading.

Proofreading is the final stage for your manuscript: major errors and style issues should already have been fixed before this stage.

  • Identify typos, punctuation errors, grammatical issues, double spaces, repeated words etc.

  • Consistency check for spelling, hyphenation, names, capitalisation

  • Cross check contents pages with chapter headings; footnotes/endnotes with text

  • Check for layout issues

  • Check for font issues

copyediting.

Copyediting is a more detailed process than proofreading and will require more time.

  • A thorough read through of your manuscript, covering spelling, style, grammar, punctuation, consistency and syntax

  • Usually done via Microsoft Word using track changes for full clarity

  • Checking facts and querying inconsistencies

  • Noting plot irregularities or flow issues

  • Standardising references

  • Appropriate style and tone for audience

  • (Optional) Preparing your Word document for typesetting

My rate is negotiable, depending on the length of the manuscript and the level of editing you require.

While I use the rates recommended by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading for guidance, I can be flexible.
